The Voyageurs of Early Wisconsin’s Fur Trade
A paddle back in time
July 21, 2019
On a beautiful July afternoon, museum visitors were able to experience the fur trade era and the lives of it’s most colorful participants, the Voyageurs, firsthand. The program began with a presentation in the museum Grand Auditorium. Fur Traders of the North West Co. Jean Paul Pauquette and Jacques Largillier of Fox of the River Voyageur Canoe LLC, were the guides. The audience learned the main points of the fur trade, from the rich European investors, the natives and trappers, to the “Plu” (pelts of the beaver) being the standard of currency. After the presentation, participants took a short walk to Rotary Park to paddle a Voyageur canoe.
