After the Iron Works—City Support for Industry

A presentation by Tom Schuessler
MLSM Grand Auditorium
On January 17, 1928, Mayville Iron Works blew out its twin blast furnaces for the last time. What happened next saved our city.
Come hear the story of resilience and reinvention:
• Ferdinand Schlesinger: “The Iron Napoleon”
• Surviving the Great Depression
• The rise of the Mayville Shoe Factory
• The Iron Works Baseball Field Grandstand and Bleachers
• How the city reclaimed the industrial grounds for Purity Cheese, Mayville Die & Tool, Rilling-Endlich, and Bachhuber & Feucht’s Mayville Construction
Meet Tom Schuessler

Tom Schuessler recently retired after 43 years of practicing law in Dodge County and Mayville. Tom and his wife, Katy, have six children and 12 grandchildren. Some of their best years were spent living with their growing family in one of the historic “Ruedebusch” houses on Horicon Street. Shortly after moving to Mayville in 1989, Tom developed a deep interest in local history—thanks to local expert Jim Schinderle—and has been a fan ever since. Tom also served two terms on the Mayville City Council.
