Contest Rules
for 2010

Who can enter?

bullet

The photo contest is strictly for amateur photographers who do not make more than 5% of their income from photography.  Any person, age 14 or older is eligible.  Anyone under 18 will require a parent or guardian’s signature.  Photos may be taken anywhere in the State of Wisconsin with the location clearly stated on the back of the photo.  If the location where the photo was taken can not be verified, at the discretion of the museum board, it may be disqualified.  No one engaged in the manufacture, sales, commercial finishing or commercial use of photographic goods is eligible.  Officers and board members of the Mayville Limestone School Museum (MLSM) and their immediate family are not eligible to enter the contest.  For the purpose of this contest, immediate family is anyone residing in the same household.  Sorry, previous year winners are ineligible the following year.

 What are the photo requirements?

bullet

Any general interest photo (print) 8"x10" in size must be mounted on an 11"x14" full black mat board, or a black foam core board.  Please do not use colored mat board.  Mounting of the photo on other material such as construction paper will disqualify the photo.  There will be two photo categories, black and white, and color.  You may enter one photo in either category or both.

bullet

Photos can be taken with any kind of camera; however, digital photos must be printed out on either glossy or matte photo paper.  No retouching or other alteration (except cropping) is permitted.  Do not submit a photo taken by someone other than yourself.

bullet

The photo must have been taken during the 2010 calendar year and be submitted by midnight January 31, 2011

 Is there an entry fee?

bullet

No, your photo is your entry.

How many photos can be entered?

bullet

You may enter one photo in each category, black and white or color.

Are there any restrictions?

bullet

Photos must be appropriate for general viewing.  Obscene, provocative, or otherwise questionable content will not be considered. The MLSM retains sole discretion as to what constitutes inappropriate content.  Photographs earning awards in previous contests or already published are not allowed.  Each contestant that submits two photos in a given year is eligible to win on either photo, but not both.

How should entries be labeled?

bullet

A completed signed entry form should be taped to the back of the matting.  Please print legibly! Entries may be dropped off at the Ben Franklin Store, 1020 Horicon Street, Mayville, or mailed to the Mayville Limestone School Museum, PO Box 102, Mayville, WI  53050-0102

What about getting consent?

bullet

Be sure to include the names and addresses, along with phone number of any recognizable people in your photo.  Photos may be disqualified if the consent of recognizable people cannot be obtained.

What about Ownerships/Use of Rights?

bullet

You retain the copyright to your photo.  By entering the contest, you agree to allow the museum to display your submitted photo without any fee or other form of compensation.  You also agree to allow the museum to display winning photos in a “past winner” photo gallery or to use the photo in future advertising or museum displays.  Photos will be credited to the photographer submitting the photo.  In the event that ownership of any photo submitted to the MLSM is contested in any manner, the MLSM retains the discretion to disqualify that photo and discontinue use of the photo.

How is judging done?

bullet

An independent panel of three judges will select the winning photos.  Entries will be judged on composition, photographic quality, originality/uniqueness, and general interest and appeal.  The MLSM will be responsible for the final determination of winning photos.

Will the photo be returned to the owner?

bullet

Winning photos become the property of the museum.  Please do not submit your only copy of a photo.  Non-winning photos can be picked up in October 2011 during museum hours on either Sunday, October 2nd or Sunday, October 16th from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The winners will be announced at an open house at the Mayville Limestone School Museum on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 1:30 p.m.
